Editorial Policies

Focus and Scope

Informal Logic publishes articles that advance the dialectic in reasoning and argumentation theory and practice. Primary criteria for the acceptance of articles with a theoretical focus or interest are: (1) the article advances the dialectic or constitutes an interesting comment on it: it presents a cogent argument, objection, interpretation or position that is an advance in relation to the background of issues and controversies on the topic; or it casts the issue addressed in a new and worthwhile light; and (2) the article makes explicit reference to the pertinent literature on its topic, and it discharges the burden of proof imposed by that scholarship. Primary criteria for acceptance of articles devoted to the teaching of informal logic, critical thinking or argumentation include: originality; utility; timeliness; and evidence of the effectiveness of the methods, materials, technologies, etc., proposed. The standard criteria for scholarly publication—topical fit with the subjects covered in the journal; adequacy of coverage to the issue addressed; clarity, organization and literateness of the prose; conceptual clarity and cogency of argumentation—apply ceteris paribus to the selection of all articles, notes and reviews.

Peer Review Process

Papers submitted for publication in Informal Logic must be prepared by the author(s) for blind reviewing: there must be no identifying references in the body of the paper, the notes, or the references. Papers are initially screened blind by the four editors. Those deemed to qualify for consideration for publication are then sent to two external referees who are scholars carefully selected by the editors for their knowledge of the subject-matter of the paper and the field, their record for thoroughness and fairness, and their expressed willingness to review in a timely manner. The editors weigh the reviewers' recommendations heavily in deciding whether to accept the paper, but the final decision is made by consensus by the editors and they are responsible for it. The editors normally do not know the identity of the author until after they have made their decision about the disposition of the paper.

 

Publication Frequency

Informal Logic publishes one Volume each calendar year. A Volume consists of four issues (a.k.a., numbers). The issues, numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4, are published as follows: No. 1 on March 1st, No. 2 on June 1st, No. 3 on September 1st, and No. 4 on December 1st. Informal Logic will normally publish in each issue the articles that are ready for publication by the date of that issue. Thus the number of articles in each issue might vary. The result, however, is that the delay between submission and publication will be reduced to a mimimum.

 

Open Access Policy

Informal Logic is available free of charge on line to anyone who accesses its URL. Back issues will be available free on line as well, as quickly as we can make them available. Anyone who has a cogent reason for needing a paper copy of the journal should make that request, with reasons, to the journal at or at the postal address of the journal. In rare cases, paper copies will be supplied, at cost, upon payment in advance.

 

Archiving

This journal utilizes the LOCKSS system to create a distributed archiving system among participating libraries and permits those libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for purposes of preservation and restoration. More...

 

Informal Logic

INFORMAL LOGIC is a peer reviewed journal publishing articles and reviews on topics related to reasoning and argumentation in theory and practice. It is deliberately multi-disciplinary, welcoming theoretical and empirical research from any pertinent field, including, but not restricted to, philosophy, rhetoric, communication, linguistics, psychology, artificial intelligence, education, law.
